HUNTER

My ears pricked at the sound of light footsteps behind me, moving softly but still too heavy to be Mel’s. My heartbeat quickened at the smoky, wild smell that accompanied those steps.

“How’d he like the food?” I asked Raz without turning away from the sink.

“Devoured it all. I suppose he was hungry,” he laughed, setting the bowls next to me on the counter. “I’ll wash these.”

“No, it’s okay. I got it.” I kept my eyes focused on the soapy water in front of me, my hands scrubbing vigorously. “Where’s Mel?”

“On a tour with Connor. They’re exploring the grounds before he starts treatment tomorrow.”

“And your tiger friend?”

“Sleeping. I expect he’ll be out for a good eighteen hours or so,” he chuckled, shaking his head as he turned to lean his back against the counter. He stood so close his arm nearly brushed mine. “Cats, you know how they are. Hope you and him don’t chase each other like a couple of domestic pets.”

“I have no intention of chasing an animal over twice my size,” I scoffed. “When it comes to him or me, there’s no question of who would win.”

“Oh? Have you gone humble on me, alpha?” Raz smacked my arm playfully with the back of his hand.

That touch, along with his use of the word alpha, sent heat and hardness running from my chest straight to my cock. Jesus, why did he have to affect me like this? Why couldn’t Mel be enough for me?

“I’m not an alpha,” I replied. “At least, I never got that opportunity.”

“No?” I still didn’t tear my attention away from the dishes, but I could see his face in my mind. One eyebrow cocked, gray eyes looking at me and waiting, like he expected an actual answer.

“My former mate was our alpha’s daughter,” I explained. “When she chose me, we were expected to become the new pack leaders. She was killed, and then I was captured before that could happen.”

“Well, you’re sort of the alpha now.” I could see his smirk in my mind. “You’re with the head female after all.”

“Yeah, but so are you,” I answered. “So’s Connor. This whole situation hasn’t exactly created a hierarchy between us.”

“You’re right, it hasn’t,” he said softly. “Does that confuse you?”

“No,” I replied. “I feel like I know my place with her. You?”

“Yeah, same,” he said in a soft voice. “I’m not jealous of anyone because I know what I mean to her, and what she means to me.”

“Right,” I agreed, turning to put plates on the drying rack and wipe my hands on a towel. “Same here.”

The air was so thick with tension between us, I could barely breathe. I wanted to move away, to get space and hopefully get my goddamn cock to calm down. But his hand on my shoulder, the weight and heat of it, made me stop.

“Why are we dancing in circles around this, wolf?” Raz’s voice was thick and husky. “Why not just be open about what’s going on?”
